Description
The rawhide braid is the first thing you notice, and the reason this knife is so distinctly Argentine.
The handle is woven entirely by hand, using narrow strips of rawhide and a technique that has long been part of the gaucho tradition. It is patient, exacting work. The artisan builds the pattern directly over the handle, tightening and adjusting the braid as it takes shape. Look closely and you can see the hand behind it — slight differences in the weave, the natural variation of the rawhide, the small details that make one knife different from the next.
It is a beautiful piece of craftsmanship, but it was never meant to be merely decorative. The knife has a full-tang Schmieden 440 stainless steel blade with a convex edge, while the accompanying rawhide sheath is cut and stitched by hand.
This season, we are bringing the same knife back in three blade lengths: 12 cm (4.7”), 14 cm (5.5”), and 20 cm (7.9”).
The 4.7” is compact and easy to handle, particularly at the table. The 5.5” gives the knife the proportions of a classic all-purpose gaucho knife. At 7.9”, it becomes a much more substantial piece, with the long silhouette traditionally associated with knives carried in the Argentine countryside.
Three sizes, each with a different presence, and the same remarkable hand-braided rawhide work that made us choose this knife in the first place.
